The Pre-Code Horror Comics of the 1950s Were Horror At It’s Best

Pre-code Horror Comics 1950s

In the 1950’s, Dr.Fredric Wertham had everyone convinced comics were rotting kid’s brains and setting them on a path of psychopathic hell raising, all because of a few drawings of hacked torsos and severed limbs.   The only thing that could save them from this fate was the Comics Code Authority that banned all the fun stuff that kids loved in comics.

Of all the different comic book genres of the time, the horror comics suffered the most from the Code. Thankfully author Jim Trombetta has collected some of the best horror tales from the pre-Comics Code era in his new book The Horror! The Horror! Comic Books the Government Didn’t Want You to Read! from Abrams Books.

This book provides a detailed history and context for these stories and their creators, spinning a tale of horror and government censorship as scary as the stories themselves.

Watch this video about the book and then get a copy for yourself.  Remember, those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it!
